Strengthening STEM Education and Teacher Preparation Across Taiwan and New Zealand
On October 13–14, Assistant Professor Dr. Chih-Jung Ku of the International Master Program in STEM Education, College of Education, National Pingtung University (NPTU), invited Dr. Kerry Lee, Senior Lecturer in Technology Education at the School of Curriculum and Pedagogy, University of Auckland, New Zealand, and Mr. Jon Lee for a two-day academic visit.
Through a guest lecture, roundtable discussion, and local school visit, the exchange fostered professional dialogue on technology education, STEAM curricula, and teacher preparation, while exploring opportunities for future international academic collaboration.
School Visit
On October 13, the visitors joined NPTU’s pre-service teachers at Yuh Kang Elementary School, where they were warmly welcomed by the teaching team led by the school principal. The visit provided insights into school-based curriculum development using local resources and included a hands-on workshop on biodegradable seedling pots made from fallen leaves, connecting environmental sustainability with interdisciplinary learning.
Guest Lecture
On October 14, Dr. Kerry Lee shared insights into the historical development of technology education, curriculum reforms, and STEAM education in New Zealand. Through interactive activities comparing responses generated by different AI tools, students were encouraged to critically evaluate AI-generated information and explore the distinction between technology and technologies, recognizing that technology education extends far beyond the use of digital devices.
Roundtable Discussion and Future Collaboration
The visit also included a roundtable discussion on interdisciplinary STEM teaching, teacher professional development, school–industry partnerships, and how teacher education can respond to emerging challenges in technology education. The discussion also explored potential opportunities for future international research and educational collaboration.
Through this exchange, NPTU continues to strengthen connections between international academic networks, teacher education, and local school practices, fostering meaningful partnerships in STEM education.
